Assignment

SLC were approached by the West Coast Fossil Park Trust (WCFPT) to develop a comprehensive proposal to the South African National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) to enhance the WCFP Vision to:

‘use the fossil experience to create wonder about past life on earth and to help build an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable future for all people’.

The proposal, requesting R67 million, was to develop a state of the art, environmentally appropriate education and visitor centre to compliment the potentially World Heritage listed WCFP. The proposed project was created to contribute towards the WCFP vision of providing field-based experiential education for school learners from throughout South Africa and developing a comprehensive research programme, bringing together international collaborators to better understand the unique fossil record found in the Park.

The proposal thoroughly explored and costed five components:

  • A specially built Museum and Education Centre (including initial quantity estimates and budgeting for a R60 million structure and surrounding environment)
  • Enhancing the current schools education programme
  • Mainstreaming a scientific research and adult education programme
  • Improving the Park transport system
  • Upgrading the Park infrastructure.

To assist the NLDTF to visualise the proposed development, SLC contracted local architects to assist to develop conceptual plans for the proposed building and greatly enhance the proposal document. The proposal was since endorsed by Iziko Museums of Cape Town, BHP Billiton, and district and local municipalities.
